Population Equivalent Calculation
How to Calculate the Equivalent Population
In this Support section of the site we provide a summary and an illustrative scheme on the method to determine the number of Equivalent Population (which for convenience we will now call more simply P.E.) based on the type of premises/business.
The Equivalent Population is taken as a basic unit of measurement for correct sizing and optimal selection of the sewage system.
In theory it would be necessary to evaluate the actual production of slurry in order to correctly dimensioning a sewage treatment system; however, in practice this evaluation is often not feasible.
In such cases, it is preferable to use this unit of measurement as a reference.
The following biographical sources have been used for the evaluation of P.E. relating to buildings producing domestic type effluents:
- ARPA Lines for the treatment of domestic waste water; ARPP.E.ilia Romagna, Povinciale section of Ravenna - 2nd Ed. January 2002.
- Guidelines for the treatment of domestic waste water and similar in areas not served by public sewerage"; ARPAT, Dipartimento Provinciale di Firenze - February 2005.
- D.M. April 2, 1968 that provides [...] unless otherwise demonstrated, to each resident settled or to be settled correspond by 25 square meters of gross living area (equal to about 80 mc empty for full), possibly increased by a quota not exceeding 5 square meters (equal to 20 mc empty per fill) for destinations not specifically residential but closely connected with residences (shops of basic necessities, collective services for the dwellings, professional studios, etc.)
